As an African American child in segregated Demopolis, he could not visit the town's library. Later, when he became a teacher in New York City, Haskins was alarmed by the lack of black history books for children.

The writer corrected the omission with the vast list of books he wrote before his death. The "Bookmark" program with Haskins will be shown, along with an evening of music and memories. Musical selections during the program will be performed by the Male Chorus of Morning Star Baptist Church, where Haskins was a member during his childhood, and by the Choir from the University of West Alabama under the direction of Willie Williams.
